Charlton have been grinding out results of recent times and this was another that comes in that category.
It was a bright but windy day on the Wirral and the pitch was watered before kick-off.
Charlton’s vocal fans behind the goal included a couple of old boys, Nathan Ecclestone and Jonjo Shelvey.
Johnnie Jackson’s leg injury ruled him out of contention and Powell shuffled his pack to cover his skipper’s absence. Danny Green switched to the left with Bradley Pritchard coming in on the right. Danny Haynes came in for his first start for the club with Bradley Wright-Phillips dropping to the bench.
Charlton created little in the opening period and fell behind after 33 minutes. An overhead effort by Martin Devaney was glanced in by Ryan Brunt.
Charlton put pressure on the Tranmere goal after interval but lost Danny Haynes to a hamstring Injury on the hour mark. His replacement, the out of form Bradley Wright-Phillips, was soon celebrating a Charlton goal.
A right-wing corner by Dale Stephens was met by Michael Morrison, whose header hit the underside of the bar, bounced down and was adjudged to have crossed the line by referee Andy Haines.
Both sides had chances with Charlton looking the more likely to score. Ben Hamer was called upon to tip a free-kick onto the bar and Chris Solly tidied up. Hamer continued the good work from Tuesday and had a fine afternoon in testing conditions.
